Wakie – Get woken up by someone from other part of the globe!!

Most or all of us hate the sound of an alarm first thing in the morning. That chirpy sound feels like we are on the border in an ongoing war or aliens have attacked and it’s time to run.

To counter this feeling some smart-ass created the button “Snooze”. But, does it help? Oh come-on, yes it does help to make us late for work!

So in an attempt by co-founders Hrachik & Tat Adjamian – to make our mornings more happy and cheerful we have – WAKIE!

WAKIE…???

As mentioned on their website, “Wakie is a fun, friendly community of people who wake each other up in the morning. It’s a brand new way to wake up, made especially for those of us who hate the jarring noise of an alarm clock. When you use Wakie, you get to start your day with a smile instead of a frown!”

In other words, Wakie is an app that helps millions of strangers to wake each other up or get woken by each other. It makes people happy by waking them up by the voice of a complete stranger from some part of the world.

If you keep an alarm you tend to snooze it and eventually end up sleeping again. But research suggests that a 1 minute talk to a stranger makes your brain wake up, that to with a ninety-nine percent guarantee and after that you don’t even feel like taking a nap. And because you have to be kind to them, you end up feeling positive and happy throughout the day.

Originally, Wakie was setup just as a website in Russia in 2011 but due to its immense popularity it eventually grew on to become an app with 1,000,000 registered users and more than 10,000,000 calls already made through the service.

But the beauty of this achievement was that, all of this was achieved with just word-of-mouth and absolutely ‘zero’ marketing budget.

Wakie is presently available in Android, iOS and Windows Phone operating systems. It has 1.5 million members across 80 countries and so far has successfully completed 30 million wake up calls. Although, the concept of Wakie is very much similar to wake up calls we receive in hotels, but what differentiates the app is the social feel given to it.

Wakie is like a Social Alarm Clock!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

wakie - how it works?

The process of setting up alarms to receive calls Wakie is actually very simple and self-explanatory.

– To begin with, you can either choose to be woken up by someone or you can also choose to wake someone up.

– So for instance if you want to be woken up; you have to set the alarm for the time you wish to be woken up, say 7:00 AM.

– At sharp 7:00 AM, you will get a call from a stranger i.e. a Wakie member from some part of the world.

– These calls last for exact 60 seconds and at 50 seconds you will get a warning about the same, after which the call will be automatically be disconnected at the 60th second.

Generally, these calls are quick & casual, so that either of the members doesn’t feel the awkwardness.

This way there are no awkward goodbyes or forced long conversations, etc.

If there are no Wakie’s available to call you to wake you up, then the app will play an automated wakeup message. But that’s not the case usually.

Likewise, if you wish to wake someone up then all you gotta do is choose that option and if there is someone who requires a wakeup call then you shall be notified. (Although, you would require a good internet connection for it)

Now the best part of this service is that, it’s completely anonymous and no phone numbers or any sort of contact details are visible!

Apart from the basic service, Wakie also provides a Wakie in-app forum where the users can connect with the ones who woke them up or vice-e-versa.

So far, Wakie has raised two rounds of investments from Leta Capital. These included USD 2 million in May 2012 and the other one worth 1 million in August 2014. Currently, the company is working on a paid version of Wakie which will have extended talking hours of upto 5 minutes, will also allow you to choose the gender of the person you wish to receive the call from and will also give you the access to their profile after the call which again would depend on individual privacy settings.

Along with that, they are also working on adding clever robo-calls wherein you will have the luxury of setting up alarms just for yourself and it will inform you about the weather in your city, news from your industry, interesting facts and much more. They are also testing an option for its consumers of a Celebrity alarm clock. Wherein one can buy an alarm clock of their favorite celebrity and get different pre-recorded calls from them every day.

Vibrant Gujarat Summit- GrowthPath

Growth Chart- VGS

Let’s give you a brief idea about the past six summits that have took place and what have been the growth trajectory of this summit till now.

2003- First Vibrant Gujarat Summit

Initially it was just an investor’s summit to boost the dying Gujarat economy and an attempt to change the face of Gujarat since the riots of 2002. Although, the summit did not raise any eyebrows or turned tables but for starters did decent business. The 2003 summit saw 76 MoU’s for 80 projects being signed worth Rs 66,068 crores and the major benefiters of this summit were Chemical and Petrochemical with 18 MoU’s, Power with 13 MoU’s and Education with 8 MoU’s signed which totaled upto an  investment of over INR 37,000 crore.

2005 & ‘07 – Second & Third Summit

Hon’ble PM and the state of Gujarat collected INR 1,06,160 crores & INR 4,65,309 crores respectively from the summit in terms of investment. During these editions as much as 227 and 363 MoU’s were signed where the sectors which benefitted the most were Agro & food processing, port, Engineering and Auto.

 2009 & ‘11 – Fourth & Fifith Summit

Gujarat had already become an Indian & Global Business Hub. The summit of 2009 & 11 saw a huge turnout and saw over 3300 MoU’s worth Rs 12,34,898 crores and 8380 MoU’s worth Rs 20,83,182 crores being signed respectively. Business tycoons and leaders from many parts of the world were completely mesmerized with the way Government of Gujarat had transformed itself. In these summits; urban development, agro and food processing and engineering were the ones which again gained major attraction.

2013 – Sixth Summit

And lastly, the sixth edition of the VG summit was an epitome of success which saw 17,719 MoU’s worth 40 lakh crore being signed. This took the summit and Gujarat in general to another level and set an altogether a different benchmark for others to achieve.

Now, if you see, the summit has successfully managed to achieve great heights and from merely 76 MoU’s to a humongous 17,719 MoU’s has grown by more than 1000% in the last 12 years. Due to its success not only has the government but all the businesses surrounding the areas which have received the investment have also flourished.

2015- Seventh Summit

The primary focus of this summit was innovation, technology, Water Security, Climate Change, Sustainable Development, Smart Cities, health and Sustainable Energy. 21,000 MoU’s were signed during this event focusing on areas such as IT, Agriculture & food processing, urban development, engineering & auto, infrastructure, education and almost every industry around.

These MoU’s along with the policy changes will open the gates for foreign investors to India and vice versa. And what most people don’t see is the fact that, on a larger scale the major beneficiaries of this summit will be the SME’s (Small & Medium Enterprises).  Also this summit is attracting attention of major investors to India. This will help further improvement of the Industry rules and policies helping startups flourish too.

All-in-All, Vibrant Gujarat Summit of 2015 is win-win for all!

Andromium – Converting Mobiles into PCs!

First of all don’t go by its name, it’s not a substitute for uranium!

Now since the inception of Smartphones, we have seen techies just dying to invent a pocket PC and as consumers, we all just wish we could have a computer that is compact & portable too. But unfortunately, a Tablet is as far as we have reached! So, what would you think if we said that, Santa Claus has fulfilled our wishes? What if we told you that, a Smartphone is all you need for that?

Excited!!!

Make way for – ANDROMIUM!!!

WHAT IS ANDROMIUM?

As mentioned on their Kickstarter campaign, “Andromium seamlessly turns your Android device into a desktop computer. It’s affordable, and devilishly easy to use; simply install the app, and plug your phone into the dock.”

Simply put, Andromium is a device that connects to your phone at one end and on any monitor/screen on the other end and with the help of a simple android app provides you all the capabilities of a powerful computer. Having said that; it is a proven fact that Smartphones today are extremely powerful; as a matter of fact, the snapdragon CPU that most of our phones are instilled with hold more power than the number one supercomputer in the world in 1996. Even after having such technologically advanced phones they aren’t even close to a full-fledged desktop! That was exactly why Andromium was built; to bridge the gap, to democratize the desktop, basically to make it all-in-one!

Other than that, it is reported that Andromium OS docking stations shall be released and shipped by summer i.e. by July to the users of LG and HTC devices who do not wish to use Chromecast which shall be released by late January of 2015.

andromium Kickstarter

Presently, Andromium has been made available for its buyers on Kickstarter for $29 only and shall be shipped by mid-February. So far, it has received a backing of $59,676 from 1,148 backers and still has a long way to go to reach its primary target of $100,000.

FEATURES

Andromium is a device that combines beauty, ergonomics & pleasing nature and is embedded with a clear-cut design with a touch of sleekness given to it. It comes with a size of 91mm x 91mm x 28m and supports mostly all the android smart phones like Samsung, HTC, Motorola Nexus 6 and OnePlusOne. The current operating system or the application is available under 30mb and all you require to operate the device is a TV/Monitor and an Andromium OS compatible phone. It practically turns your Smartphone into a moving pocket computer and seriously without any catch attached to it.  andromium connectivity

Entering and exiting your phone to the dock is as easy as receiving or disconnecting a call and you can use all the functions of your phone including receiving phone calls, messages, notifications, etc! It comes with three full-sized USB ports which can be connected to all the accessories which you could possibly require to make your Smartphone a computer. P.S. it also has a port for a power cord, to keep your phone charged.

andromium kit

The dock is especially designed keeping the portability in mind which concludes light weight, durability, travel friendly design that also comes with a flip cover to protect it while travelling. Along with that, the dock is made in such a way that your phone can be attached to it without removing its protective case. Andromium is built on similar lines and by picking up the best elements of Windows 7 and OSX UI to create an intuitive model that projects Andromium’s potential and power. And as far as its functioning is concerned, it works exactly like a Linux based desktop which means right-click opens a menu, double-clicking opens software and folders, and so on…

While using Andromium you can watch movies, play games and that to high tech ones, create PowerPoint presentations, spreadsheets, or for that matter do all your work using just your phone from any place in the world that to without sacrificing the efficiency, usability or money. Apart from that; as per clarifications from the company, Andromium works as a layer on top of the normal android OS and it uses its own window manager, task manager, memory manager, web browser and video player. The UI i.e. User Interface is built to be ‘desktop style’ which means that all the shortcuts you could use on a desktop or your cellphone, work perfectly fine on here as well.

Andromium OS

REVIEW

As per the company’s agenda, they are primarily targeting the developing nations of the world such as India where 224 million Smartphones were sold in 2014. But due to the same reason they are lagging behind in achieving their target on Kickstarter, mainly because not everyone in India is familiar with the website and its doings. To add to that; what is killing it even more is the fact that, the product has only been released for android users when on a global scale, iOS users are more in demand and have much more spending capacity to purchase such a product. Otherwise, the product and its functionalists seem to be amazing & one of its kind and can prove to be an extremely useful device for many.

Leo – Bringing Back the Feel of Vintage Music!!!

Music is something that lives in our minds! Our hearts! Our souls!

We feel every word, every beat of the music; we can relate to it, go back in the past and relive our memories through music. In short, music is not just a part of our lives but our lives are a part of music. And, we now have a song for every occasion, emotion, feeling or for that matter every genre we can possibly think of; but then what is that we really look for is the question? To be very honest; we don’t often listen to music in a club, party, event or for that matter a music player itself. We first listen to it on our phones or iPods and then move on to the rest. Now, I personally being a music freak can vouch for this when I say that ultimately we look for the right and good quality using these devices, which they often lack. Having said that; when there’s a problem, eventually someone comes up with a solution too!

And solving this for us we have Analog Artistry LLC’s, LEO – Vintage Analog Sound from any Modern Device.

Let’s show you what Leo is and how it works…!

leo full

To begin with; what do you think Leo really is? Music player? iPod-like device? Some high-tech speakers? Sun-sign? No, No, No & definitely No!

In simple terms, Leo is a mini headphone amplifier that imitates the functionalities of the olden days “record players & vintage tubes” to give you the desired warmth in the music.  You might have heard of or seen amplifiers for your music system at home or cars, etc but Leo is the first of its kind! It being a mini headphone amplifier holds simplified functions of producing vintage sounds using any modern device.

As mentioned on their Kickstarter page, Leo is a mini headphone amplifier that emulates the warm tone of vintage audio equipment. Connect Leo to any Smartphone or music player to your favorite headphones to experience the sound that vinyl lovers have been raving about without the expense and hassle. Basically, it is a god-sent device which helps all the vintage music lovers to get the actual feel of such audio files.

Wondering how it sounds?

Leo functionality

Leo brings music to life; it makes you feel as if you are listening to a live performance. The elite quality & crispness that it brings to the tone and frequencies, brings out the best performance from any pair of headphones. Apart from that; it holds a complete analog design with 3.5 mm stereo audio-in and headphone-out, a frequency response of roughly 3 decibels and a power per channel of 105 Mega Watts. The beauty & uniqueness of this device is that; unlike other audio equipments which provide you with a flat and narrow range of tones, Leo offers you a range of multiple frequencies while reconstructing the exact tonal quality as compared to that of vintage amplifiers.

Now as clean is its sound, so is its design!

As unique the sound is of Leo, equally mesmerizing is its design! To accomplish the same more than one year has been invested; which started off by measuring many vintage amplifiers and turntables, engineering equations that replicated the vintage gear, coding simulations to search for the best suited circuit for the sound, and lastly, the intuitive interface. Leo is manufactured with a rugged aluminum body, CNC engraved aluminum knobs and also holds precision laser cut faceplates that come with options like walnut veneer, smooth black leather or black acrylic. The standard units come with a backlighting of soft yellow LED and the Premium ones come with UV LED backlighting. Leo offers a power of 9 volts and comes with a height of 37 mm, width of 54 mm and a weight of 95 grams.

Review

Leo is presently available for $99 on Kickstarter and as per estimation it should be delivered to its backers by May 2015. So far, it has managed to collect a sum of $11,169 with just 89  backers and has already crossed its target of $10,000 with 30 days still to go.

To be fair, the idea used by Leo is by far the most innovative one we have come across. And the product, its design & technology; together form the perfect mini amplifier too! Now the only thing which is being awaited is the device itself so that we could give you the sound review for the same!

Minors & Their Unbelievable Inventions!

As we are all aware, the world is drastically changing but along with that the age-limit for doing business or should we say for inventions is also drastically changing. What was once considered as the play ground of the oldies is now becoming the work space of the minor!

So far, Mark Zuckerberg was considered as one of the youngest and most successful businessman of all times but he has now been brutally out-beaten by the newest breed of young-chaps from across the world with their out-of-the-box and jaw-dropping inventions.

Below we have a list of 5 amazing kids and their contribution to the world within few years since they started walking:

  • Taylor Wilson

Taylor-Wilson-4

Born on May 7, 1994, is the youngest nuclear scientist and science advocate from America. In 2008, at the age of 14 he won that title by building a nuclear fusion reactor and that to in his parent’s garage.

Since his schooling days; just like every other kid but only to be far more advanced, his interests kept changing from biology to genetics, and then from chemistry to rocketry and finally it took a halt at nukes!

Eventually that fascination of his proved fruitful when he got financial backing of £2,000 & £1,000 as contingency funds from his head teacher Jim Hourigan at Priory Academy.

And within no time they successfully built a fully functioning reactor which could fling atoms together in a plasma core at 500 million degrees Fahrenheit.

Recently at TED, the young genius showed his design of a small, modular nuclear fission reactor that could be easily built in a factory-like space and had the potential to be installed absolutely anywhere across the world. Not only did he prove that these reactors were compact and efficient than the current ones but he also proved the fact that these reactors could also be put into action to use the decommissioned nuclear arsenal from the cold-war period as a fruitful source material.

These reactors hold enough power to provide electricity to easily 25,000 and 100,000 homes at a time.

Presently, at the age of 19 Taylor is working on ways to develop new ways to use subatomic particles to fight and possibly cure cancer, nuclear terrorism, and energy problems.

  • Shubham Banerjee

Shubham Banerjee

The 12-year old boy with an Indian-origin living in California, US has invented Braigo – a portable Braille printer! But what is astonishing is that this printer has been made just with the use of a Lego Mindstorms EV3 kit.

Since his own inception, Shubham loved Lego and always read a post on the box which said, ‘Help the blind people with donations.’ Upon asking his parents about it he got the most obvious answer that any parent usually gave – ‘Google it!’. While researching about it he figured that Braille printers cost USD 2000, which was awfully too much.

Thus, he took matters in his own hands and after three weeks of rigorous hardwork & with the help of Intel Edison he created Braigo that now costs USD 350 only.

As a matter of fact, he also hired Henry Wedler who is visually impaired and is completing his PhD in computational chemistry at UC Davis; as an advisor to Braigo Labs Inc. for more effective know-how’s.

So far, his father Niloy Banerjee was the only investor in the project having USD 35,000 already chipped-in but for the betterment of the company’s R&D capabilities the company in November 2014 got a venture funding from Intel Capital at the Intel Capital Global Summit.

With this investment, Shubham also became the youngest entrepreneur to get venture capital funding.

Presently, his primary target market is India and is also working with many blind institutions and non-profits here to introduce the product in domestic languages such as Hindi.

  • Angad Daryani

Angad_Daryani

The 16-year old boy, who is currently pursuing his International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai, has built India’s first 3D printer which possibly could be the world’s cheapest 3D printer.

Angad, a true talent who always had the passion to build things, fabricated a miniature solar-powered boat and along with an automatic watering system to water plants in the garden during his early days. This eventually led him to want for more and thus he dropped out-of school in his 9th grade. And within a short period of time, gave birth to the India’s first 3D printer. But things didn’t end there and in 2013 Angad with the help of MIT developed an “eye-pad” for the visually impaired. After that, there was no stopping & long lists of creations were added to his kitty.

Lately, he started two companies and named them “Sharkits,” which will make low-cost maker kits, and Sharkbot, which will manufacture low-cost 3D printers which he claims will last longer than the current ones in the market & would roughly cost USD 350 a unit (Rs. 20,000).  As reported on the economic times, these printers would be weighed at about 14-15 kg approximately and can be used at offices, homes, schools or hospitals to print plastic, resin and nylon objects.

To promote more talent, at such young age Angad has also setup his own maker space called – Makers Asylum and is managed by his co-founder, Vaibhav Chhabra.

He has also worked with some of the most reputed institutes or organizations in the world such as MIT Media Lab (India & US), TreeLabs (IIT Bombay) & Innovators Club of India.

  • Sahil Doshi

Sahil_Doshi

The 14-year old boy from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has invented ‘PolluCell’, that converts carbon dioxide into electricity which has got him to win the 2014 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge award for the most innovative & eco-friendly battery design and has been named as the America’s ‘top young scientist’. Along with that, the winner has also received prize money of USD 25,000 and a paid adventure trip to Costa Rica.

In an attempt to address the issue of lack of electricity and rising levels of toxic air pollution across the world, Sahil has created an energy storage device named PolluCell which converts carbon dioxide into electricity. By doing so, it also decreases the emission and spread of greenhouse gases and can be used by all households in general.

This product can be the best solution and can prove to be of extreme help to most of the developing nations which face an acute shortage of power.

Although, the product has very recently been introduced and much information has not been given out but a big-bang can definitely be expected soon.

  • Thomas Suarez

thomas-2

One of the youngest in our category, the then 12-year old minor had proactively taught himself to build iPhone apps and is the proud founder of many too!

At the age of 9, Thomas out of pure inquisitiveness downloaded the iOS Developer ToolKit and simulation tool onto his computer and unknowingly or knowingly successfully learnt Python, Java and C language.

And to top that, in a few months of time he also created his first app called – Earth Fortune! Also, he dragged his parents to become his first customers by asking them to pay USD 99 to get his app into iOS Store. Followed by that invention he also created a whack-a-mole game called “Bustin Jeiber”. Eventually, the app gained traction and the money earned from it was spent on buying himself an iPod Touch. Seeing that becoming successful, he started his own company called – CarrotCorp.

He is now a 15-year old occasional businessman and has started an app club with his friends who wish to learn the skill & is working on other kids with his skills to help them become developers. Apart from that, personally he is also working on a 3D printer which according to him will function at a speed that is 10 times faster than the current fastest one.

Now, the list doesn’t end with just these 5 names. There are thousands of kids who are making history out there. This shows a glimpse of the future generations could and would be capable of doing. We can only say – There is no age for innovation and entrepreneurship!

101Touch – The GenNext touch keyboard

In the last few years, we have seen that technology has taken a huge leap! There’s a whole new evolution which has taken place in a very short period of time. From crappy desktops we have ruthlessly moved on to classy laptops, Smartphones, portable tablets, phablets and recently iWatch. In short, we have moved from type to touch which now apparently is the new “In Thing”! Keeping that in mind, we have our latest entrant – 101Touch!!!

Let’s give you a brief about 101Touch!!!

101Touch a Czech Republic based invention, as the name itself suggests is a touch keyboard but not just limited to typing. It holds a whole lot other functions that will revolutionize the typing functions and will give a totally new perspective to computer control, thus bringing back the dying desktop computers.

The idea of 101Touch emerged when the makers were frustrated by the inflexibility of the traditional keyboard and not to forget the zillions of shortcuts that they had to remember for every different program or game. That’s when they thought of making a keyboard that is flexible, easy to use and with multiple features without having to remember shortcuts. Thus after three years of rigorous hard work and overcoming all the complications, 101Touch evolved!

Presently, the keyboards comes with an 18.3 inch display, ARM architecture processor, 101Touch operating system with core Android OS, 16GB of internal memory, USB & Bluetooth connectivity and lastly, the keyboard has its own battery.

It is available at a price of £150 on Kickstarter and so far has received £84,640 from 615 backers but still has a long way to go to achieve its primary target of £180,000 with only 7 days left.

The product literally has world class features and indeed has the potential to revolutionize the way keyboards are being used.
